The Beerbarian Malt Mill

The following pages are here to provide information on how I designed my own malt mill. I hope the following information may help others that have access to the right equipment, design and build there own mill. First let me tell why I decided to build my own mill, and how I came about with my design. I guess it first started when I decided I wanted to brew all grain. I live in an area where the nearest brew supply shop is a minimum of a 3½ hour drive away, I didn't particularly like the idea of purchasing precrushed grain by mail order for various reasons. I therefore decided I wanted to crush my own grain. I started paging through a couple brewing magazines and web sites, and I quickly realized that malt mills were quite costly for the amount of money I was wanting to spend (let alone much more than what the SO would probably allow me to).

This is the point I decided to try and construct my own mill. I had ready access to a lathe and some other power tools, so I started to think how to go about designing a mill based on some of the pictures I had seen on the web and in magazines. One day I was on the BrewRat Chat and mentioned I was thinking of building my own mill. One of the other rats told me that a club member had built his own mill and pointed me to the URL to go look at. When I loaded the page I was amazed to see "The HHHoagie Milling Company" malt mill. The web page for HHHoagie's malt mill had enough information about his mill, that it made me realize how easy it could build my own mill. Over the next few months I build my own mill after a short time locating all the materials I needed. I spent a few hours most Saturdays and around $45 in all materials I needed to buy.
